The Elements of Halton project is funded by a Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Outreach Fund grant. The project explores the scientific history of the Borough of Halton by looking at the chemical elements that were significant in its development. This story begins with the Cheshire sandstone which formed 200 million years ago and explores the development of the alkali process and creation of chlorine, weaving in current themes around climate change and pollution.

Elements of Halton builds on an earlier pilot project, also funded by the RSC, called Halton’s Periodic Table 1869-2019 which involved two local schools.

We are working in partnership with Halton Primary Arts Network (HPAN), and there are 29 local schools engaged with the project. All schools will take part in the annual exhibition in Spring 2021, taking inspiration from the Elements of Halton stories. All schools taking part are supported by visual artists (funded through HPAN) to develop their exhibition entries.

Ten schools are working with a creative practitioner, Laura Hennessy, to bring ten different historical themes to life through visual arts and performance. These themes tell parts of the historical story and are linked to key chemical elements. The schools will research their stories and develop a performance piece working with Laura.

All ten pieces will be filmed and edited together into one performance which will be shared online.
